I attend a special sneak preview tasting of 18 different wines from DuBoeuf, the leading French wine company in the US, led by Mr. Georges DuBoeuf himself. After the tasting, I spoke with his son, Franck DuBoeuf and with Yann Bourigault, North American Export Director for DuBoeuf. We learn about the qualities of the Gamay grape, and about the differences between Beaujolais Cru and the more famous Beaujolais Nouveau.

She speaks with us about some special ingredients which are indigenous to this South American land, and how she incorporates them into her cooking. I attended a tasting at New York’s Astor Center, the state of the art tasting room above Astor Wines, where I got a chance to taste a number of Rieslings from the Finger Lakes paired with nibbles prepared by some of the region’s best chefs. In addition, we learned about many of the fun activities on offer in the region, from sporting, to car racing, and of course, the heritage museums of Central New York.

I catch up with Ariane Daguin from D’Artagnan Foods, on the occasion of a luncheon she co-hosted at Restaurant Orsay in NYC to celebrate the arrival of the wines of Domaine du Tariquet from her native Gascony to America. We chat about the wine and food pairings, and the seasonal wild fowl D’Artagnan is bringing to America from Scotland.

We just got this email from our friends Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg, whom we interviewed for the CPN a few months back:

Dear Friends,

It’s a pleasure to send greetings to you on this first day of spring…especially with such exciting news to share!

THE WASHINGTON POST : Today marks the impressive debut of the newly-redesigned Food section of — not to mention the debut of our first wine column in its pages.

We hope you’ll be sure to pick up a copy of today’s (March 21st) paper — or simply click through online to www.washingtonpost.com — to check out our column featuring four terrific wines that are the essence of spring in a glass, and (of course) pair deliciously with food!

Four Pours That Are Verifiably Vernal

By Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg
Wednesday, March 21, 2007; Page F07

We’re not your typical wine writers: We love food first and wine second. Frankly, we think the most amazing thing about wine is its ability to make food taste even better.

That means, simply, that you can bring more pleasure into your life every day through more thoughtful — even inspired — pairings. We know from experience that the wrong combination can ruin the wine, the food or both: Imagine pad thai wiped out by a cabernet, or Riesling overwhelmed by a steak. On the other hand, reverse those same wine choices, and you’ll see that the ideal match can transform virtually any meal from ordinary to extraordinary.

Today she joins us to speak about her award winning book, “The Emperor of Wine, the Rise of Robert M. This book won the Gourmand World Cookbook Award, and was a finalist for both the James Beard and the IACP awards. Elin and I sat down over a cup of tea on a chilly winter afternoon.
